Dr. Paul Lohmann has extended its LomaBiome line with a butyrate range aimed at gut health formulation: sodium butyrate, plus two sodium-free alternatives in calcium butyrate and calcium magnesium butyrate. Prefilled butyrate capsules are offered alongside them, removing powder handling from the production step.
The company frames the launch around postbiotics, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in particular, which it credits with driving much of the momentum behind gut health, one of the fastest-growing categories in the supplement market. Interest in the area has broadened well past classic probiotic concepts, with formulators now building microbiome support alongside GLP-1 therapies and other metabolic applications.
What the SCFA argument rests on
SCFAs are fatty acids built on a chain of fewer than six carbon atoms. Those the company names as most relevant in the human body include butyrate and propionate, both generated in the gut when microbes ferment dietary fiber, and described by the company as key bioactive metabolites.
According to Dr. Paul Lohmann, both are associated with a diverse and balanced gut, help maintain a healthy gut environment, and take part in physiological processes in the gut and elsewhere in the body. The company also states that sodium butyrate is considered a source of butyric acid and is widely used to support intestinal health, reinforce the gut barrier, and encourage a balanced microbiome. Those are company positioning statements rather than independently verified outcomes, and related clinical work on ingredients that modulate intestinal barrier function is still developing.
One point deserves care on the label. The company positions its SCFA mineral salts as postbiotics, on the grounds that they deliver bioactive microbial metabolites without live bacteria. Under the 2021 ISAPP consensus definition, however, purified metabolites without cellular biomass, isolated butyric acid included, sit outside the postbiotic category. Brands planning to market a butyrate product as postbiotic should check that wording against the definition before it reaches a label or a claims dossier.
Three salts, three formulation profiles
The range gives formulators a choice of counter-ion:
- LomaBiome Sodium Butyrate, which the company says dissolves fast.
- LomaBiome Calcium Butyrate, which dissolves more slowly and provides a sodium-free source of butyric acid.
- LomaBiome Calcium Magnesium Butyrate, also sodium-free, pairing butyrate with two minerals.
The sodium-free options matter most in daily-dose products where total sodium load is already under scrutiny. That pressure is visible across mineral formulation more broadly, where developers have been shifting away from sodium-heavy mineral blends toward magnesium-based systems.
Dissolution rate is the second lever. The company puts the difference plainly: sodium butyrate dissolves fast, calcium butyrate dissolves slower, which is a starting point for decisions on dosage form and release profile. A propionate line runs alongside the butyrates, with LomaBiome Sodium Propionate and LomaBiome Magnesium Propionate, the latter again sodium-free.
Prefilled capsules address the odor problem
Butyrate powders carry a natural odor, and the company presents handling them as the practical obstacle its capsule format is meant to remove. The butyrates are therefore offered as prefilled capsules, which the company positions as eliminating both powder handling and the capsule filling step, giving a faster route to market and saving time and cost. Fill weight and capsule shell material can be customized on request.
Quality and manufacturing
According to the company, the products are designed to meet demanding impurity requirements, with strict controls on heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and mercury. It points to a low heavy metal grade, comprehensive specifications, strict purity criteria, and a broad set of supporting documentation across the range.
Manufacturing is split across the group: the butyrates are made in the USA by T.E. Neesby, a member of the Dr. Paul Lohmann group, while the propionates are made in Germany by Dr. Paul Lohmann.
