Abstract
Nourishment has always been known in society as an essential aspect that can be useful in fighting against diseases. Today’s drug compounds can be traced back to traditional medicine, which began as early as 4000 BC. Dietary supplements and nutraceuticals are products designed to enhance health by providing additional nutrients or bioactive compounds beyond a regular diet. The industrialized manufacture of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals only began in the middle of the twentieth century.
At a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7%, the worldwide nutraceutical industry is projected to increase from $289.8 billion in 2021 to $438.9 billion by 2026. Advancements in food processing technology, more consumer awareness of healthy eating, and improved knowledge of food value would support it. When it comes to natural products utilized for healing, man has been using them for centuries, but it was only recently that bioactive compounds that elicited these effects were isolated, characterized, synthesized, and marketed.
Nutraceuticals such as ginseng, echinacea, folic acid, omega-3 eggs, cod liver oil, and calcium-fortified orange juice are among the most popular. Production of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals is challenging and time-consuming and requires strict compliance with quality and regulatory standards.
A nutraceutical product involves purchasing various raw materials, mixing, manufacturing the final product, quality control, and other factors such as accurate weighing and labeling of the product and, most importantly, registration by specific international standards in some countries, including India, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Cambodia. The manufacturing procedures for dietary supplements and nutraceuticals are outlined here.
