At 5 milligrams of Erinacine A per serving, a newly launched grain-free Lion’s Mane mycelium supplement targets a category in which most products provide little to no detectable active compound.
Real Mushrooms has launched Real Mycelium, a grain-free Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) mycelium supplement that the company says delivers a clinically verified 5 milligram (mg) dose of Erinacine A in every serving, the compound it identifies as the key bioactive in Lion’s Mane mycelium.
The company points to emerging clinical research on Erinacine A, which it says indicates effects beginning at 3 mg. Real Mycelium provides 5 mg per serving across 2 capsules, while mycelium fermented grain (MFG) products typically provide less than half a milligram, according to the company.

What Erinacine A is
Erinacine A is described by the company as the key bioactive compound in Lion’s Mane mycelium, the vegetative growth stage of the fungus. It is one of the few compounds reported to cross the blood-brain barrier, and it has been studied for its role in supporting the body’s production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein involved in the growth and communication of brain cells. These mechanisms place it among the more researched compounds in functional mushroom nutraceuticals.
The company says emerging clinical studies of Erinacine A support results beginning at 3 mg, and frames the 5 mg per serving in Real Mycelium against MFG products, which it says deliver less than 0.5 mg. The product lists its Erinacine A content on the label, which the company positions as a transparency and standardization reference point for the category.
Across the Lion’s Mane category, most supplements do not disclose their active compound levels, which the company argues makes it difficult for buyers to evaluate ingredient quality, standardization, and formulation differences between products. Many mycelium products are grown on a grain substrate that is never removed, so a large share of the finished material can be grain and starch rather than fungal biomass.
“Erinacine A is currently the most important compound in Lion’s Mane mycelium. Yet, we’ve tested the majority of Lion’s Mane mycelium products on the market and found that most contain little to none. If consumers are buying Lion’s Mane mycelium products, they should be getting a verified, significant dose of Erinacine A. Real Mycelium is one of the only products that will deliver this. Consumers can find this information right on our label, and it’s what they should be looking for and demanding.”
The distinction is partly a production one: because MFG products ferment grain rather than isolating pure mycelium, the company says the resulting active-compound concentration tends to be low. It states that its own material is always grain-free, a point it ties to the broader debate over how Hericium erinaceus and other mushroom actives are grown and measured.
“There’s a quality crisis in the functional mushroom supplement industry. The majority of products, including mycelium products, are grown on a grain substrate. With this method, the grain is never removed, so consumers are actually paying for mostly grain and starch. Our products are always grain-free.”
Real Mushrooms said in its statement that the formula is intended to support healthy brain aging, along with memory, focus, and cognitive performance. The company added that a higher therapeutic dose of 4 capsules per day, equal to 10 mg of Erinacine A, is positioned to support healthy auditory function in adults ages 65 and over.
The firm said that listing a verified Erinacine A dose on the label is meant to give formulators and buyers a clearer basis for comparing Lion’s Mane mycelium ingredients. Real Mycelium became available on June 22, 2026.
