Microbiome formulas target gut-lung axis and digestive regularity

Gut Lung Probiotics

Two microbiome formulas entering wider distribution pair three Lactobacillus-group strains with botanical extracts, and resistant potato starch with beetroot and methylated B12, converging on short-chain fatty acid production as the shared mechanism.

For formulators, the pairing shows how organ-axis positioning is constructed: a strain blend selected for a target beyond digestion, and a fermentable substrate chosen to feed the microbes that produce the metabolites doing the signaling.

Resbiotic Nutrition said its resB Lung Support Probiotic and resG prebeet Prebiotic are now stocked at H-E-B stores across Texas [1]. The probiotic was evaluated in an open-label trial published in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2023, which tested Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RSB11, Lactobacillus acidophilus RSB12, and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus RSB13 alongside turmeric, holy basil, and vasaka extracts in 11 asthmatic and 11 healthy participants [2].

What the gut-lung axis describes

The gut-lung axis refers to bidirectional signaling between the intestinal microbiome and the respiratory tract. The route most commonly proposed runs through microbial metabolites: short-chain fatty acids produced by colonic fermentation enter circulation and are associated with immune modulation at sites well away from the gut.

In the published trial, serum short-chain fatty acids rose alongside lung function measures in the asthmatic group, consistent with that proposed route [2].

The company also reported that in a resbiotic clinical study, 82% of participants using resB reported an improved quality of life and 72% noticed improved lung function [1]. Both figures are participant-reported, and the release does not identify the study, its design, or its size.

The published base is narrow. The 2023 trial was open-label, carried no placebo arm, and enrolled 22 people in total, so the data support tolerability and a directional signal rather than a settled effect [2].

The more usable detail for formulation teams is the construction. resB combines three strains with three botanical extracts rather than relying on a single organism, an approach that spreads the functional load across species with different fermentation profiles, but that complicates attribution when an effect does appear. Probiotic effects are also generally strain-specific, which is why strain-level identification rather than genus labeling tends to be the formulation-relevant unit.

“This launch is especially meaningful for us. Bringing resB and resG to H-E-B feels like coming home – allowing us to bring clinically studied microbiome science directly to our neighbors across the state.”

C. Vivek Lal, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Resbiotic Nutrition

resG prebeet approaches the same metabolite pathway from the substrate side. It is built on resistant potato starch, a native type-2 resistant starch that reaches the colon largely undigested, where microbial fermentation commonly yields short-chain fatty acids. The company says the starch nourishes gut bacteria including Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium, and pairs it with beetroot powder and methylated vitamin B12 in a mixed berry powder positioned for digestion and regularity [1].

That combination carries a practical caveat. Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium respond to different substrates, so selective enrichment generally has to be demonstrated for the specific starch, dose, and matrix in use rather than inherited from the ingredient class.

Resbiotic said in its statement that resB targets the gut-lung axis using its proprietary strains to support respiratory health, and that the formula was designed for a healthy inflammatory response and for seasonal sinus and congestion support.

The firm added that resG is intended as an accessible entry point into microbiome health. Read together, the two products sketch a formulation pattern that is becoming more common in the category: pair a defined strain blend with a fermentable substrate, then build the positioning on the metabolites both are expected to generate rather than on the organisms themselves.
