The BENEO Sweets Box as a catalyst for inventive confectionery solutions

Beneo Isomalt

Hard-boiled candies are still a recognisable fixture on confectionery shelves, yet their appeal is coming under pressure as shoppers increasingly seek out treats that pair indulgence with something more. To put numbers to it, three out of five consumers worldwide are deliberately cutting back on sugar[1], and over three-quarters of snack buyers in the US say functional benefits matter when they decide what to buy[2]. This is a clear signal that expectations across the whole category are changing.

To understand how the segment might reinvent itself, read in the following the opinion of Alisa Borbonus, Product Manager Functional Carbohydrates at BENEO, who is spearheading the creation of their new Sweets Box.

The tool takes market intelligence and converts it into concrete product prototypes, giving customers a way to discover fresh possibilities for indulgent treats built around ingredients such as Isomalt and Palatinose™.

“Isomalt is the technical backbone of the Sweets Box.”

  • The reasons hard-boiled candies face shifting consumer expectations, and where the openings are
  • The leading consumer and market trends steering healthier, more functional confectionery
  • The way the BENEO Sweets Box converts insight into genuine product concepts
  • Isomalt’s part as a technical enabler
  • Innovation examples, ranging from energy candies through to functional gummies
  • How BENEO partners with customers on co-creation

A category at a turning point

Hard-boiled candies enjoy wide availability, low price points, and a sense of nostalgia. Even so, the category has seen little in the way of innovation lately. Because of this, consumers, younger ones in particular, are gravitating toward livelier formats such as gummies, chews, and functional snacks.

The data points to rising worldwide appetite for functional confectionery, alongside a sharpening focus on innovation in chewy and multi-textured products.[3] That trend puts traditional segments under pressure to adapt. As Alisa Borbonus puts it, the waning appeal of hard-boiled candies comes down largely to an absence of innovation rather than any flaw in the format itself, which she believes still holds plenty of promise.

Taken together, these dynamics point to a real opportunity: not to do away with the category, but to reimagine it through innovation, added functionality, and new experiences.

A changing market: from straightforward indulgence to enjoyment with a purpose

Consumers now ask more of their confectionery. A handful of major trends are reshaping the field:

  • Sugar reduction is going mainstream: A larger proportion of shoppers are deliberately lowering their sugar intake and hunting for credible alternatives.
  • Functionality matters more than ever: Buyers are increasingly drawn to products offering extra value, whether that’s an energy boost, added fibre, or a gentler blood glucose response.
  • Texture and experience build engagement: Multi-textured formats and unexpected sensory moments are emerging as key points of difference.
  • Health consciousness shapes decisions: Worries about dental health, calorie load, and general wellbeing all feed interest in lower-sugar or sugar-free options.

This points to an unmistakable opening: confectionery is moving away from plain indulgence and toward enjoyment that serves a purpose.

From insight to application: the Sweets Box idea

To guide customers through these shifts, BENEO created the Sweets Box, a practical, hands-on innovation tool built to make ideas tangible. Rather than confining concepts to presentation slides, it puts physical prototypes in front of people to look at, handle and taste. Every sample comes with its own concept card pulling together formulation know-how, technical strengths, and positioning suggestions. According to Alisa Borbonus, this approach moves the discussion away from theory and toward joint development, letting customers gauge first-hand how a concept might be tailored to their own brands.

The upshot is that innovation conversations move faster and carry more substance, closing the distance between insight and execution.

Isomalt: making modern, healthier confectionery possible

Isomalt sits at the centre of many of the Sweets Box concepts. It is a long-proven sugar replacer offering distinct, application-focused technical strengths, including:

  • Low hygroscopicity, which helps stop products turning sticky even in humid conditions
  • Strong shelf-life stability
  • A gentle sweetness that allows flavours to come through well
  • Versatility across a broad spread of confectionery applications

As Alisa describes it, Isomalt is the technical backbone of the Sweets Box. Crucially, the concepts on display prove that it lends itself not only to conventional formats but to fresh, inventive confectionery designs as well.

Prototype highlights: rethinking confectionery formats

The Sweets Box gathers a spread of concepts that mirror today’s market trends and the openings starting to appear. Each prototype also shows how ingredients like Isomalt and Palatinose™ underpin stability, sensory appeal, and product differentiation in contemporary confectionery.

Energy candy for today’s lifestyles

Caffeinated hard candies answer the rising demand for handy energy options. Flavour choices span coffee-caramel and energy-drink profiles, suited to the work day or to gaming sessions. Isomalt makes possible a clear, stable hard-candy matrix with vivid colour and a sugar-like mouthfeel, free of any cooling sensation. Its low hygroscopicity backs up shelf life and helps keep stickiness at bay, so the candies stay fit for eating on the move and in humid settings. On top of that, the slow dissolution profile draws out flavour release and stretches the moment of enjoyment.

Liquid-filled candies for multi-sensory appeal

These concepts marry a sugar-free outer shell with a liquid core, offering a textural contrast and a livelier eating experience. Isomalt delivers a sturdy, non-hygroscopic shell that keeps delicate liquid fillings protected for the duration of shelf life. Its melt viscosity also makes room for a larger liquid centre even within small candies, while its sugar-like sweetness and lack of any cooling effect help safeguard subtle flavours such as yuzu and matcha.

Dual-coated chewing gum

Applying Isomalt as the outer coating supports better visual impact, a satisfying crunch and greater stability, with the option of coloured or translucent finishes. Paired with Xylitol in a two-layer coating, Isomalt reinforces environmental stability, vibrant colour and firm adhesion between layers, and it opens the door to cost savings too. The concept shows how Isomalt can speed up processing and deliver stable, sugar-free coatings even when humidity is high.

Functional gummies with Palatinose™

These gummy prototypes probe the potential for energy-led positioning and more purposeful confectionery. Set against ordinary sugars, Palatinose™ releases glucose more slowly and steadily, and supports a lower blood glucose response once eaten. Beyond that nutritional angle, the prototypes also display technical differentiation: a Palatinose™ coating produces a crunchy exterior while the gummy core stays soft, giving consumers a multi-textured experience and helping the product stand out within the gummy segment.

Melting tea gummies with fibre and Palatinose™

Drawing on concepts already popular in Asia, these gummies blend indulgence with added nutritional value, and create fresh occasions to enjoy them, tea moments among them. Palatinose™ brings a mild sweetness together with a lower blood glucose response than conventional sugars, helping to update traditionally sugar-based tea gummies from a nutritional standpoint. Chicory root fibres such as Orafti® L85 or Beneo-scL85 add fibre enrichment while also improving texture and managing sugar crystallisation. In combination, these properties yield a smooth, stable structure well suited to delicate tea flavours.

Cotton candy reinvented

A fresh use for Isomalt that shows how even classic formats can be reworked for modern tastes. Here, Isomalt makes a sugar-free cotton candy concept feasible, while also lending process stability and a pleasant sensory profile to an unconventional format. The prototype illustrates how Isomalt can push sugar-free confectionery past the usual hard-boiled candies and into playful, experience-driven territory.

Prototypes in the box include:

  • Caffeinated energy hard candies in a coffee-caramel flavour
  • Dual-coated chewing gum with Isomalt as the outer coating
  • Functional gummies featuring Palatinose™
  • Melting tea gummies with chicory root fibre and Palatinose™
  • Energy candy made with Isomalt
  • Sugar-free liquid-filled candies with Isomalt for multi-sensory appeal

Together, these examples show how confectionery can move forward through format innovation, functionality, and sensory differentiation.

From prototypes to partnership

The BENEO Sweets Box does more than display ideas. It is built to drive collaboration. As BENEO explains, the prototypes are only a starting point, meant to be adapted, refined and developed further according to each customer’s strategy, target audience and region. By bringing together market intelligence, technical feasibility, and real-world applications, BENEO accompanies customers across the entire innovation journey, from the first concept through to finished product development. This underlines the company’s role as a solution partner, turning trends into products that make commercial sense.

Looking ahead: the future of confectionery innovation

As consumer expectations keep evolving, sugar replacers such as Isomalt are taking on greater importance. Alisa sees them moving from niche ingredients toward becoming strategic enablers for modern confectionery.

Going forward, the confectionery concepts that succeed will need to bring together:

  • Indulgence
  • Functionality
  • Technical performance
  • Consumer relevance

By uniting these elements, manufacturers can open up new avenues for growth, even in segments long regarded as mature, and usher in a new wave of confectionery innovation.
